Mngcunube Development

Mngcunube is a Section 21 Company (NPO). Mngcunube has been in operation since 1995. We currently have over 80 personnel engaged in projects described under our Track Record. We focus on implementation but also support others in designing, managing and monitoring their own projects and enterprises.

Vision - A socially integrated and economically equitable Southern African rural economy.

Mission - To be the development agency of choice for design, implementation, management and monitoring in rural and agricultural development and land reform beneficiary support and rural community works programmes.

Mngcunube's core business is:

• Design and implementation and monitoring of agricultural and SMME projects in rural areas
• Provide mentorship and support for land reform beneficiaries.
• Implement and manage community works projects.

Our services are mostly aimed at two target groups:
• The rural poor in former 'homelands',on rural commonages and in rural towns.
• Land reform beneficiaries.

We have built up a particularly strong track record in the following areas:

• Livestock Improvement
• Community Works projects
• Homestead Gardens – notably keyhole gardens
• Commonage Development
• Support for land reform beneficiaries
• SMME Development as part of the above and case by case
• Small scale water and irrigation development
• Organisational Development as part of commonage, land reform and SMME work

We are not confined to these settings. We have built on many years of experience in rural and agricultural development to offer implementation and advisory services that can be delivered at significant scale. We focus on implementation but also support others in designing, managing and monitoring their own projects and enterprises.

Mngcunube has been in operation since 1995. We currently have over 30 personnel engaged in the following projects:

• A livestock project in Mbashe Municipality from 2008 and ongoing that has reached over 1 800 farmers
• A livestock project in Alfred Nzo District (January 2007-2014) that has reached over 4000 farmers
• A livestock project in the Sakhisizwe, Intsika Yethu, Tsolwana, Emalahleni and Ngcobo areas of the Chris Hani District that has reached over 6000 farmers
• A livestock improvement and marketing project in the Nyandeni Local Municipality of the OR Tambo District that started in August 2010 and has reached over 1700 farmers
• A livestock project in the Sterkspruit area of Senqu Local Municipality with over 500 farmers involved (Chris Hani DM)
• Support and supply 15 community based livestock workers (we call them Village Link Persons or VLPs for short) who operate as successful micro enterprises that keep up animal health supplies and services in project areas once Mngcunube has completed its role. There are nine in Elundini, one in Mbashe and five VLPs in Alfred Nzo. Community Works Programme
• Community Works Projects in Motheo District in Free Sate and in the Gariep, Senqu, Sakhisizwe, Tsolo, Qumbu, Elundini and Intsika Yethu Local Municipalities in the Eastern Cape. There are 7 500 workers each working 8 days a month. Work covers: Agriculture (keyhole gardens, trench gardens, potholing of maize, planting, maintenance, brush clearing, clearing of public open spaces); Construction (fencing, renovations of schools and clinics etc, donga reclamation, building seedling nurseries); Education (assistance in class rooms, crèches etc); Social (assistance at orphanages and old age homes etc, HBC, meal preparation etc); Community Service (tasks that directly assist the local municipality in service delivery)
• A homestead and keyhole gardens project in the Sakhisizwe, Intsika Yethu, Tsolwana, Emalahleni and Ngcobo areas of the Chris Hani District that has reached over 500 households
• Forty gardens of 1000 square metres each at Njiveni District in the Tsolo District near Mthatha.
